The
reason UT football fans think and act the way they do at football games is a
result of how they are socialized to behave. Factors such as the media, friends,
and family draw an outline for how UT students should act in the rowdy Darrell
K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium.
The media has the biggest effect on UT student
football fans. The Texas Longhorns have their own network, the Longhorn
Network. This program is hosted by ESPN and is available nationwide. What this
means is that longhorn fans not only have to support the longhorns for their
own satisfaction, but they now have to represent themselves as the rowdiest and
best fans on a network available to the entire nation. Being the first college
to have a nationally produced sports television network, longhorn fans feel
obligated to show the nation everything truly is bigger and better in Texas, especially
the quality of the football fans.
According to data collected from
social advertisements on Facebook, a large number of fans support the Longhorns
from outside of Texas. This is important because UT students who actually
attend the games have the job of representing the intensity of the fan base.
Out of state viewers want to see that the current students are living up to and
exceeding the tradition that UT fans are superior to those of any other school.
